Doxology: What is the point?

by Peter Lindstrom Comments (0) 5 Minutes Read 2055 Views (0)

Sometimes referred to as the Common Doxology, Thomas Ken (1637-1711), an Anglican minister penned this in 1674 (see history of this tune here by Don Sweeting). I have seemingly countless times in various churches sung this Doxology.  We still regularly sing it in our local church.  And, as a family, it is often sung in our times of family worship.  It is a reminder that our worship is … Read More →

Do you ever struggle during family worship reading through the Psalms of judgment, otherwise known as imprecatory Psalms or prayers? As a parent (especially for fathers, here), have you given thought to your leadership within the family? Are you feeling like you just ain’t gett’in no respect? Feeling like a failure? Missing key leadership features in directing the family? Are the children only responding to you if you yell at them? Does Mr. T from the A-Team come to mind in how you are responding to those around you? Do you feel your wife is on-board but on another plane going another direction? Do you want to … Read More →

Team Together: Pastors and Parents in the Home

by Peter Lindstrom Comments (0) 6 Minutes Read 1588 Views (0)

How can Pastors and the Parents team together for the sake of the home and the church? One of the dangers of the Christian life is to rely too heavily on the pastor or the church leadership to nurture the family in the Christian faith.  There is no teaming together with the pastor and the parents.  This default thinking can be disastrous. Parents, instead of leading spiritually in the home with family worship and discipleship, leave the responsibility of spiritual development in the hands … Read More →

by Peter Lindstrom Comments (1) 15 Minutes Read 2956 Views (2)

IF YOU AS PARENTS had the opportunity to do ONE "most important" thing with your family each day, what would it be? What would be the one domino to knock over to start the day right?  Or, to end the day right?  Or, both? What would be SO important that you should block off time each day to see it done? What would this ONE thing be that would help your family be strong in the Lord? Now before I tell you about this ONE thing, let me share my story about it... MY STORY OF THE … Read More →

Christ is Risen

But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:20 “But, now…” Contrary to all the false teachings about the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:12-19), the Apostle Paul speaks the truth (1 Corinthians 15:1-11). [tweet_dis]And so our hope rests in the Risen Christ. And this is… Read More →

What If There Was No Easter?

What if there was no Easter? It’s a question that we don’t ask because we already know the truth of the matter. However, what if…? For the Apostle Paul it’s an important thought. And it’s an important thought as we worship together at church and as we gather in family worship. Here’s Paul’s view: [tweet_dis]If… Read More →

The Goodness of Good Friday

Where is the goodness of Good Friday in a cruel cross? It is evidenced in our salvation from sin. If we took the time to list out all our sins individually it would take us all day [correction: more than a lifetime]. But here’s a short list of our sins in which Paul reminds us of… Read More →

Palm Sunday Preparation

As we remember a personal birthday or an anniversary or Thanksgiving Day… Palm Sunday is all the more important to remember as it brings us to a climax in Jesus’ earthly mission in his life, death and resurrection. This day’s significance lies in the fact that Jesus fulfills the prophetic word of Zechariah 9:9 and… Read More →

Fear of the Lord: How Should We Think?

As a father and husband trying to lead his family, what does it mean to fear the Lord? To fear the Lord may sound archaic and perhaps unimportant. After all, don’t we just want our children to love God…and not fear Him? Shouldn’t our motto be, “No fear taught here?” For a healthy family, the… Read More →
